The Three Work Houses

Updated: Nov 28

A common question that comes up for clients is “What do I need to know about my career?”

There are three main areas in your chart that represent the type of work you do to serve others, how you make an income, and how you can express your highest potential through your career.  These areas are houses two, six, and ten.

In this article, I will be breaking down each house to help you better understand what you can glean from your own chart about your professional skills and career assets.  But before we jump right into the three work houses, it will be important for you to grasp the influence of the sign ruling each of these houses (because the sign tells us about the attitude you bring to your work life).

The Ruling Sign’s Influence on Your Work Attitude

Every house is ruled by a zodiac sign and each zodiac sign tells us something about the attitude you bring to that area of life.  This is a very important point to keep in mind because if you don’t have any planets in houses two, six, or ten, then you are going to be relying on the zodiac sign there to help you understand the attitude (and aptitudes) you bring to these areas.

Looking at this example chart, let’s say you have no planets in the 10th house of career but you have Cancer on the Midheaven (or ruling the 10th house).  This would imply that you bring a caring, nurturing, and emotionally supportive attitude to your workplace.  Can you see how just knowing this information can give you more confidence to go into the field of counseling or nursing versus sales or other high-pressure roles?

Considering the second house ruler, if you have Taurus or Capricorn here, you will likely take working for yourself very seriously.  As Earth signs, Taurus and Capricorn are both very determined to produce material results for themselves, whereas if you have Scorpio or Pisces ruling the second house (two Water signs), there is more of a pull towards emotional fulfillment in how one earns money versus just accumulating things to feel secure.

Thus, we always want to pay attention to the sign on the house cusp because that tells us a lot about the strengths and capabilities we naturally embody – which can be refined and developed over time to make us very successful in our chosen field.

Now let’s cover each of the work houses one by one and add in the energy of the planets.

The Second House

The second house shows us how you earn an income through your own blood, sweat, and tears.  Translation: You have to work at it.  If you have planets in the second house, I am sorry, but you are not going to be able to allow others to carry you through life.  You are here to be self-sufficient - and to recognize your capabilities. The good news: you were built for it. You have what it takes to earn an income for yourself and provide the material things you desire. What's most important for you then, is to figure out what your values are as these will determine the type of lifestyle you need to be happy.

Putting a Planet in a House

Let’s say that you happen to have Saturn in your second house (illustrated in the chart example).  This would imply challenges, setbacks, and delays in bringing in money or material possessions by your own means.  But it doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to take care of yourself in the long run.  What it does mean is that things won’t come easily early on – or as quickly as you’d like.  You may have to work harder than someone else.  The good news is, that the harder you work, the greater your rewards.  I think of the poor kid who becomes the CEO of a major company who never got a degree.  Did he have to work hard?  Yes.  But was it worth it?  Of course.

The Sixth House

The sixth house tells us how you show up to serve others.  This house is all about how we approach our duties and responsibilities in life and create space for others.  If you have a lot of planets here, you are learning to adopt the virtue of humility and wake up each day asking, “How can I serve?”

The sign on the cusp of the sixth house is very telling of the behavior you exhibit and the attitude you bring toward your service to others.  Let’s say it’s Leo.  Leo is an outgoing fire sign who loves to entertain.  In this role, you may find yourself being a teacher or a coach – always on some kind of stage and always in a position to positively influence others with your creativity and enthusiasm.  This would be a much different expression than if you had Capricorn here.  Capricorn is more focused on the chores or tasks to be completed for others, while Leo is about reaching the hearts of the people it serves.

The Tenth House

The tenth house is a culmination of the second and the sixth house.  If the second house shows us how you go out into the world and “fend for yourself,” and the sixth house shows us what inherent abilities you use to serve others effectively, then the tenth house is where you get to enjoy making money for doing the work you love.

Not surprisingly, it takes life experience and working long enough to get to this point; to know yourself, and to find work that’s truly meaningful to you.  Luckily, if you are reading this blog, you are a step ahead because you are now aware that there is a major clue sitting at the top of your chart - signaling what will make you happy in a career.

The sign ruling the 10th house cusp shows us the characteristics you bring to your career and those that will assist you greatly if you use them in your professional life.

Example: Let’s say you have Sagittarius on your 10th house cusp and you get into real estate.  This career would check a lot of boxes that satisfy the Sagittarian personality.  Why?  First, because Sagittarians love travel and movement.  They enjoy spontaneity and can easily adapt to changes in a schedule.  Second, they love helping people AND having a good time.  They can see the big picture and help alleviate stress from a buyer’s mind.  Plus, being in real estate is exciting because you never know what’s going to happen next, it keeps you on your toes, and the possibilities for income are limitless. This is all very freeing for a Sagittarius!

Now let’s say that this person with Sagittarius on the 10th house had no idea about their chart and they got into an accounting job with the government.  Do you think they would be very happy sitting in a cubicle filing papers all day?  I didn’t think so.  This is why understanding the three work houses and how they correlate with your ability to make an income, serve others, and feel genuine gratification from your work, can be an enlightening, life-changing discovery!
