This blog is about mastering the art of staying neutral - no matter what life throws at you. It’s about developing a state of grace within yourself that no one and nothing can shake (not even hard astrological times). It’s about remembering who you are at your core and what you’re really here to achieve. I may be an Evolutionary Astrologer, but first and foremost I am a spiritual counselor. I believe there is always a Higher Power at play guiding us to the next best steps to take. Astrology is a gift from the cosmos to help us navigate our lives, but it’s not here to predict our fates. We are. Astrology offers us a beautiful map of our own psyche and the lessons our soul chose for us to learn in this lifetime. But once we understand the path our souls are headed down, it's up to us to make things happen. Neutrality, by definition, is the state of being neutral or unengaged in a dispute or contest amongst others. I love the word “unengaged” because it reminds me of the importance of staying detached from our ego’s constant demands and the outer world’s dramas and illusions. Our Highest Self is always “disengaged” from these distractions because it is only focused on Source Energy. And Source Energy is always good, loving, peaceful, harmonious, and calm.
So, if we learn to stay neutral in our lives, what we are really doing is staying neutral from emotional states that pull us down.
When we realize that staying neutral actually optimizes our happiness, we can approach life from this place of deep acceptance and tolerance that allows the Universe to show us what’s best for us. We can then more easily surrender when things don’t go “our way,” because we trust - so much - that there must be a better way. And that God/the Universe/our Higher Self has something greater coming that we had not planned. What Does This Have to Do With Astrology? In astrology, we look to transiting planets in the sky making specific aspects to our natal charts to determine “what’s coming” for us. And in doing so we can get ready, prepare ourselves, and feel more peace through our understanding. Sometimes, it may simply be about “expecting the unexpected” (if Uranus is involved), but even if it’s not exactly clear what could happen next, it is extremely reassuring to have a pre-calibrated mindset of neutrality so that no matter what does happen, we can stay centered and not allow our emotions to spin out of control.
An attitude of neutrality takes us out of ego-obsessed worry mode, and into observer mode. It doesn’t matter if Venus is retrograde and you make an unwise investment, or Mars is retrograde and you take impulsive action on a decision that you strongly regret later on. With an attitude of neutrality, you can say to yourself, “Well, I guess that was all a part of my learning process,” and move on. While I am certainly not advising you to go through life’s pivotal times blindly, I am also trusting very much in your ability to recover if you do make some mistakes along the way. We all do, that’s how we learn. And we all have strong emotions that come out more intensely at certain times than at others. This is why it’s so helpful to have your transit chart to consult. Recognizing what phase of life you are going through can certainly take the pressure off. And, having a plan, a focus, and even a timeline to follow will put your mind at ease even if things do change. This is because you know your efforts were put to use - not wasted - and you did consciously direct your energy the way you wanted it to go. If things turn out otherwise, this should just increase your faith even more, that the Universe has a better plan in store.
Neutrality is an especially important concept to embrace when we feel very passionate about something that we are excited to have or receive. This is because it can help us accept the loss if we don’t actually acquire that thing, person, or outcome we so desired.
Sometimes, choosing the things we are most passionate about and most excited about in the moment aren’t actually the best choices for us long-term.
One sign that it’s probably best to wait on making a decision is if you feel the need to act impulsively or if the “voice in your head” has an urgency to it. What I have found is that if it is true Divine guidance, it will keep coming back around and you will have multiple chances to act upon it. What you should feel is a deep sense of peace and serenity when you make any decision. When studying astrology and navigating through planetary retrogrades, I always tell clients to “keep an attitude of neutrality.” This never fails to help people stay grounded when their desires get turned up for something that is actually not in their best interest. While emotions can certainly steer us right, fear is often mistakenly followed as a false reason to do or not do something.
When you are feeling confused, it is not the time to act. If you fear you may miss an opportunity, pray about it. Then wait until you truly feel neutral inside and trust that what is best for you will occur for you. And remember: the more positivity and love you put out into the Universe, the more returns to you. So keep the faith. At the end of the day, everything that is meant for you will come for you.
