Libra

Updated: Sep 23

Life is about choices.  Libra is the sign most acutely aware of this fact.  Libras see opportunity costs wherever they go; they realize that whenever they choose something, they inevitably must give something else up.  Therefore, these folks take a lot of time weighing their decisions back and forth. This is why Libra is represented by the balance scales.

There are three things you should know if you have strong Libra placements (Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or a group of planets in this sign).  First, Libras value fairness and equality.  They want to find the middle ground and are uncomfortable with conflict.  Second, Libras strive to have harmonious environments.  They will go out of their way to ensure everyone else is comfortable so that they can relax.  Another way to say this is that Libras have a deep need for peace, serenity, and tranquility.  Third, Libras are drawn to beauty; aesthetic experiences lift their spirits.

Libra in Relationships

If you have any Libras in your life you may notice that they are attracted to relationships.  This is completely natural for them because Libras don’t like to be alone (at least, not for the long haul).  They were born for partnership; having love and fulfilling relationships brings them great joy and helps them fulfill their purpose. Thus, Libras will work hard to create harmonious bonds and ensure their needs for companionship are met.  Anyone who has a Libra as a partner or spouse will benefit from their diplomatic approach and ability to see things from their partner's point of view.

Like the middle child, Libras are natural peacemakers amongst friends and siblings.  However, because they try so hard to attain peace, they often put their own needs aside which leads to resentment down the road.  They need to learn how to be fair with themselves just as much as they are fair with others.  Libras can be indecisive because they are always looking out for the best solution for all, but sometimes one does not exist.  And in these moments, Libras need to make the best decision for themselves, even if others don’t agree or don’t want them to do it.

This is because Libras have a tendency of losing themselves in relationships.  They aim to please so much that they give and give and give until they compromise themselves into exhaustion.  Therefore, Libras benefit from learning how to balance their own self-care needs and personal interests with those of others.

In friendships, Libras are empathetic and objective.  They give honest advice after weighing all the pros and cons.  They are naturally good at accepting the paradoxes of life and can live in harmony with those with opposing views.  Because of this, they make good role models of tolerance and acceptance.

Career Options for Libra

Libras recognize that “truth” can be found on both sides, and this is why they make excellent judges, mediators, and marriage and family counselors.  Libras also value beauty and recognize the importance of aesthetics to calm the nerves.  They have good taste and an eye for quality.   They naturally seek out balance in their environments which makes them excellent interior designers, Feng Shui consultants, florists, and gardeners.

Additionally, because they are more sensitive to how things look, they make talented artists, beauticians, and fashion designers.  And since they like making people feel good, they can work in any field that provides physical, mental, or emotional comfort.  Possibilities include a massage therapist, a nail technician, a counselor, or any role that provides a meaningful service and supports the well-being of others.

Concluding Thoughts

Ruled by Venus, Libras are attuned to the rapture of love, the comfort of beauty, and the joy of companionship.  They are certainly not a sign that wants to go through life alone, they have far too much love to give and need a receptive partner to share an intimate bond with.  In a perfect world, Libras would find their soulmate early on and settle down to live happily ever after for the rest of their lives.

After saying all this, however, it's important to remember that there are many other signs in the birth chart that can alter the way you express Libra energy in your life.  You may, for example, be a Libra Sun with an Aries Moon and an Aquarius rising.  Aries is the opposite energy of Libra, and the Moon is how you express yourself emotionally. So, this is a perfect example where a paradox exists between your outward behavior and how you go about accomplishing your goals (Libra - Sun sign), and how you emotionally react to the world and make choices from your instinctual side (Aries - Moon sign).

The rising sign (Ascendant) is how others view you when they first meet you – it’s the impression you give to strangers – and if that’s Aquarian energy you’re giving off, people aren’t going to "get the vibe" that you need a partnership to be happy.  Heck, they’ll probably assume you’d rather be alone and aloof with your thoughts versus spending time emotionally connecting with others.  And yet, you still have that Libra Sun who values partnership… so, we must always remember the birth chart is complex, layered, paradoxical, and even contradicting.  But couldn’t we say the same thing about ourselves?

Astrology attempts to make sense of why we act the way we do and why certain parts of us oppose each other at times.  What the passionate spiritual seeker must do is dissect each layer of the personality to make sense of why he or she acts the way he or she does. Understanding your Sun sign is a good place to start, but recognizing that it’s just one part of you, is essential.  You have many other "parts" that could be talking louder than your Sun sign based on the entire layout of your chart.  As always, it’s wise to examine the chart holistically, the way a Libra would, seeking balance and harmony in all opposing energies to discover deeper meaning and higher potentials through each layer of the personality.
