When change strikes unexpectedly, it can be very comforting to have your transit chart to consult. Even if you do not know your exact birth time, you can still find valuable information to help you understand what’s happening now. Looking at the planets moving in the sky and seeing how they interact with planets in your natal chart is called a transit reading. This can be very useful when navigating major changes, so you know what’s coming and where to put your energy.
For example, if you are currently in your early to mid-forties you could be experiencing your Uranus opposition. This is a mid-life transit that affects us all in the way we think about our lives. Because the planet Uranus represents radical ideas and sudden changes in thought, we often find ourselves doing things we said we would never do. This could be as trivial as coloring our hair or as big as changing careers. It can mean moving across the country to adopt a whole new lifestyle or getting a divorce. Uranus brings sudden flashes of insight that often bring new innovations to our lives and those around us. And while it can be immensely helpful in getting us aligned to our life purpose, it can also disrupt the lives of those around us.
Uranus is trying to get us to think differently about ourselves, to recreate ourselves, and to develop an identity that is truly authentic to who we are today.
Since the person having a Uranus opposition will feel this shift internally at first, they must stay in touch with their feelings so they can express why they feel the way they do to those around them. Don’t be surprised if people don’t understand you at this time or they think you’re crazy and that you’ve lost your mind. That’s actually very common during a Uranus opposition because people are waking up to themselves. If they haven’t been living for the values they believe in, they are likely to drastically change course now.
Saturn Return:
Another big transit that occurs two to three times in a person’s life, is Saturn return. Saturn return first happens around age 29-30 and then again at 59-60. It takes Saturn about 29.5 years to orbit the Sun and to travel through all 12 houses, so this is about the time it takes to align with a person’s natal Saturn. I say “about” because Saturn has retrograde periods that can affect the exact timing of this conjunction.
When Saturn return happens, major shifts take place that force a person to review their life and see if they are really living in integrity with themselves. If Uranus is about our mind changing, Saturn is about our behavior; our ability to take action for our highest best. Saturn shows us how we’ve programmed our Universe and what we’ve built thus far.
Nothing that happens to us in astrology is just external. Every action is preceded by a thought, and every behavior by a series of beliefs held in mind.
So, whenever there is any major transit involving Saturn, we must ask ourselves, what preceded this external event in my mind? With Saturn return, we have two choices ahead: keep going along the path society has set for us or carve out our own way. Either path will have its challenges. That’s just the nature of Saturn. But one path will bear more fruit in the end, both in terms of personal satisfaction and outward success.
Something to keep in mind: Uranus is conscious recognition of new thought, whereas Saturn is a reflection of our own unconscious behavior reflected in the present. This is why noticing what house Saturn is currently traveling through is so helpful in revealing to us where are lessons of growth are.
The challenges Saturn presents us with are always attempts to show us what behaviors have not been aligned with who we really are.
Chiron Return:
Another major transit is Chiron return happening at age 50 which gives us a new set of instructions for addressing unhealed wounds. This is a very important time for inner work, psychotherapy, meditation, and time spent asking yourself the hard questions. It’s a pivotal time to heal what has been triggering you for a lifetime. Don’t let this golden period pass without acknowledging where you still hurt inside. Otherwise, you’ll have to keep dealing with uncomfortable emotions because they haven’t been seen, heard, expressed, and acknowledged.
The above transits are just some of the many important times in our lives when we want to be reviewing our charts for guidance. Below I have listed other life circumstances where you may find it helpful to get a reading.
12 Life Circumstances to Consider Getting a Reading:
1. You’re switching jobs
2. You’re moving across the country (or across the street)
3. A parent passes away
4. The youngest child heads off to college
5. You meet someone new!
6. You get a divorce
7. You’ve experienced a loss
8. You’re trying to help your child find their way
9. You’re trying to re-spark the lost flame in your relationship
10. You’re approaching these ages where major transits are occurring: 30, 40, 50, or 60.
11. You have a big decision to make and are unclear which way to go
12. You want to develop your spiritual gifts and understand your life’s purpose
Sometimes just understanding that there is a rhythm in the Universe and that these things are not just “random” helps bring peace to your mind. Many people come into a reading confused about what area of life they should be focusing on. They often feel overwhelmed by responsibilities and frustrated about not being able to use their energy in a way that feels most meaningful to them. This is when astrology comes in as a beautiful self-growth tool to point them in the right direction.
While you always have free will to make whatever decisions you choose, astrology offers you a map and shows you where to direct your energy for the best results. Now, instead of being fearful about upcoming changes, you can be proactive and look at your chart.
