Mastering the Art of Self-Transformation: A Pluto Blog

Pluto is the gateway to our unconscious.  No other planet brings up our fears, our insecurities, and our repressed emotions quite like Pluto. No other planet teaches us about self-regeneration and rebirth like the lord of the underworld.

This is why learning to work with this archetype - and not against it - is so essential to navigating the transformative transits of Pluto.

Currently, there are some major Pluto transits happening in my own life, so I am going to use myself for a quick example.  I was born with Pluto conjunct Mars in Scorpio in my first house square my Sun in the fourth house.  Right now, I have transiting Pluto conjunct my Sun AND transiting Pluto square my natal Pluto and natal Mars.  If you have no idea what that means, keep reading, I won’t confuse you like that again!  I just want people with an astrology background to understand my current Pluto predicament.

This is a time when Pluto’s energy is strongly activated in me.  To help you relate to this, I will share some personal information just to make my point.  Recently, I’ve had a lot of dreams where I’ve felt helpless, powerless, and without control over the things happening to me in my life.  These are all big Pluto themes because they have to do with power and control.  While intense, these dreams are not an accurate representation of how I feel on the outside in my waking life.  But they ARE representations of the unconscious emotions I have in my psyche.

This is an important point: Pluto reveals the fears stored in our unconscious and the buried emotions from our past.  So, even if my dreams are not representative of my current conscious feelings, they remind me of the lingering pain when I did not have power and control in the past.  So, Pluto transits can activate the fears and insecurities we once felt.

I hope you can relate this to your own life when you study Pluto in your chart because Pluto is good at reminding us of our disempowered past.  But this doesn’t mean we have to let it derail our present!  We all have inner demons.  Pluto reminds us not to succumb to them.

Pluto is the planet of self-transformation not because it does the transforming but because it puts situations and circumstances in our lives that challenge us to reclaim our power.

Once we do, we’ve mastered the art of working with Pluto.  But be careful, there is a fine line between having too little power (allowing ourselves to be the victim and giving our power away) and having too much (overpowering others for the sake of our own needs).  This is why we must practice discernment and find the right balance between exerting our power and trying to control others. Pluto always challenges us to become more self-empowered via our own means - not through disempowering others.

When you feel Pluto’s influence strongly upon you, remember that it’s a time to step into your power, embrace the life you’ve created (or change it), and show Pluto that you’re ready to give up who you were for who you are.

Here are some areas of life where Pluto may be asking you to transform:

First house: Your physical appearance, your face, your temperament, the way you present yourself to the world, and the way you view yourself.  (This is where my natal Pluto is, so I’ll just list some brief challenges I’ve experienced that have led to major physical regeneration and self-transformations).

-Cystic acne

-Shingles twice before age 32

-Cold Urticaria

-Mold toxicity

-EBV

-Hashimoto’s

-8 root canals and many oral surgeries to remove them

I could go on, but I’ll spare you the rest.  The point is that these are all conditions relating to my face/brain/mouth which affect my physical appearance directly and the way I feel about myself.  Though hard to experience, I learned a lot about humility through these conditions and they’ve changed my views about vanity dramatically.  I now believe that one should flaunt their natural beauty, but also honor whatever choices they make to enhance their look and feel more beautiful.  After what I’ve been through, I no longer believe this is vain – it’s valuing what you have while you still have it!

Second house: Providing a secure and peaceful environment from which you can grow and prosper.  Taking responsible action to provide for yourself financially and materially. Recognizing yourself as worthy to receive.

Third house: Communicating, expressing yourself clearly and effectively.  Learning and absorbing information.  Sharing messages, staying in touch with neighbors and siblings. Everything having to do with your immediate environment and early education.

Fourth house: Family matters, matters of the home and real estate, allowing yourself to experience the depth of your emotions, becoming emotionally secure.  Your parents.

Fifth house: Fun, play, romance, dating.  Recreational hobbies, self-expression, and creativity.  Childlike innocence and vulnerability.  Children.

Sixth house: Daily routines, service to others, pets, and any type of student/teacher or aunt/uncle to niece/nephew relationships.  Where we refine our skills and uphold our duties.  Health, fitness, and how we take care of our bodies.

Seventh house: Marriage and partnerships, signing contracts that commit someone to someone else.  One-on-one interactions.  Learning to be with another.

Eighth house: Sex, death, the occult (all things taboo), psychology, merging with another (intimately or in a financial situation), management of other people’s money.  Self-transformation and rebirth - This is the house ruled by Pluto.

Ninth house: Higher learning, religion, law, philosophy, traveling overseas, expanding one’s horizons, learning through experience, and developing faith.

Tenth house: Becoming proficient in business, advancing yourself in your career, leaving a legacy behind, and establishing a positive public image.

Eleventh house: Groups, friends, networks.  Technology, the Internet, humanitarian efforts, hopes, dreams, and wishes.

Twelfth house: Connecting to your higher self, spending time alone, discovering what lies in your unconscious, and developing your psychic abilities.

Hopefully, with these descriptions, you can pinpoint the areas you have been asked to transform the most (based on what house you have Pluto in your natal chart AND what house Pluto is currently transiting in for you).  Then you can have more compassion for yourself for what you’ve had to endure.

*You may also want to look up the medical references for each sign/house of Pluto because that can give you additional clues as to how you've had to "transform" and "regenerate" on a physical level.

The reward of self-transformation is wisdom.  When we approach anything with an acceptance of the present and a willingness to change, we invite knowledge from the unknown.

Though it may be scary to embrace the unknown, once we do, we allow changes to occur through us with more ease and flow.  Now let’s look at some questions you can ask yourself about the ways Pluto prompts you to grow:

Pluto Questions:

-Where can I claim more power in my life?

-Who have I given my power away to?

-Where do I feel helpless and out of control in my life?

-What steps can I take to regain control over my life and feel less powerless?

Please always remember: Though transits always affect specific areas of your life, you have the power to influence the way you react to your Pluto transits.

Belief is a powerful thing. You can decide what you are transforming in yourself and how to move through the process.  You don’t have to become a “victim of Pluto" whereby you wait idle until something happens to you.  You have free will, so use it.

In Summary

Here are some reminders for how to master the art of self-transformation through Pluto’s influence in your chart.

-Next time you have a Pluto transit, learn about where it is happening so you can be prepared - rather than fearful. Look at it as a chance to make a needed change that will enhance your life for the better.  Remind yourself that whatever you’re going through is ultimately an opportunity to evolve, learn, and grow.  It’s not meant to hurt you, but to transform you into the highest, strongest version of yourself.

-Remember to have forgiveness for yourself for all your “perceived” failures and wrong turns in life. Know that they probably had to occur for you to learn important lessons for your Soul’s highest evolution.

-Once you are in the middle of a transformative experience, the best thing you can do is develop the skills on the inside to cope with changes on the outside.  A wonderful book that helped me do this is called The Presence Process by Michael Brown.

-Don’t compare yourself to others.  Once you accept that everything that’s happening to you is your “norm” then you can stop comparing yourself to everyone else.  AND you can stop living in victim consciousness – and start living with conviction.

-Develop more compassion for yourself and become your own best friend.  Give yourself permission to transform, tell yourself it’s okay to change.

-Make peace with whatever has happened to you.  Forgive.  Drop all expectations of what should happen.  Then you will have mastered the art of surrender.  (Surrender is a prerequisite for self-transformation.)

-When change gets hard, seek support.  Try counseling or psychotherapy.  Don’t feel bad about this either – it’s completely natural.  We ALL need help from time to time.

-Stay in an attitude of gratitude.  Remind yourself daily what you have to be thankful for.

-Meditate to gain clarity.  Take some time alone to connect to your higher self regularly.  Bring your concerns into mediation and simply ask, “What do I really need to focus on now?”

-Beware of the temptation to allow any planet to overpower you.  You are always the captain of your ship.  You have control over the decisions you make and the consequences you receive from them.  Astrology gives us a tool to look at different aspects of our psyche getting activated at different times in our lives (through planetary transits), but none of this is meant to scare you.  It’s meant to bring awareness and mindfulness to your daily life.  Do not live your life in fear because you have an active Pluto transit!  Simply look at it as an opportunity to grow and learn more about yourself.

-And lastly… The key to self-transformation is having the willingness to change and the ability to let go.
