How the Tarot Relates to Astrology

Both Tarot and Astrology have long histories of helping humans make sense of what’s happening in their lives. Each system uses symbols and archetypes to illuminate our inner nature, our patterns of behavior, and the cycles we move through over time.

At times, it can be difficult to see how our thoughts, emotions, and actions are shaping our experiences—for better or for worse. This is where both Tarot and Astrology act as mirrors of awareness. They reflect back our moment‑to‑moment feelings, fears, motivations, and even our highest potential outcomes, helping us gain clarity and perspective.

Rather than predicting a fixed future, both tools invite conscious participation. They show us where we are so we can make more informed, empowered choices about where we’re going.

The Benefits of Using Tarot with Astrology

Using Tarot and Astrology together creates a rich, layered approach to self‑understanding. When combined, they deepen insight and strengthen trust in the guidance we receive. Here are some reasons to use both:

  • A shared symbolic language: Both Tarot and Astrology rely on archetypes and symbolism to help us interpret our life experiences.

  • Activation of inner archetypes: Each system reflects aspects of ourselves that become active at different stages and seasons of life.

  • Deeper perspective: Using both together allows us to see subtle nuances—why something is happening, not just what is happening.

  • Validation and confirmation: Tarot often affirms what Astrology reveals (and vice versa), which builds confidence, faith, and courage to take aligned action.

How Tarot and Astrology Speak the Same Language

Just as Astrology is organized by elements—fire, earth, air, and water—so is the Tarot. Each Tarot suit corresponds to one of these elements:

  • Fire – creativity, passion, spirit, and motivation

  • Earth – the physical world, resources, stability, and embodiment

  • Air – thoughts, communication, perception, and beliefs

  • Water – emotions, intuition, sensitivity, and relationships

These elemental correspondences help us determine whether an issue is emotional, mental, spiritual, or physical in nature.

For example, we may believe we are dealing with a purely physical concern, when the deeper root is actually emotional or mental. Tarot excels at revealing what may be hidden or misunderstood within us, allowing us to respond with greater compassion and awareness.

Basic Guidance for Using Tarot with Astrology

To begin integrating Tarot with Astrology, it’s helpful to first build a relationship with your Tarot deck. This includes learning the meanings of both the Major and Minor Arcana cards and becoming familiar with their elemental associations.

As you practice, you’ll begin to notice intuitive connections between astrological symbols—planets, signs, and transits—and specific Tarot cards. Over time, these associations become second nature.

The more you work with the cards, the more trust you develop in the guidance you receive. Tarot becomes a readily accessible companion for clarification, reflection, and insight—especially when you want quick feedback alongside astrological transits or chart interpretations.

A resource I highly recommend for deepening this integration is The Complete Guide to Tarot and Astrology by Louise Edington.

A Personal Way I Use Tarot with Astrology

One simple yet powerful way I personally work with Tarot alongside Astrology is during the Full Moon. Every Full Moon, I create a five-card Tarot spread to receive guidance for the coming month.

After pulling the cards, I spend time journaling with them—allowing my intuition to interpret their messages rather than relying solely on memorized meanings. This reflective process helps the cards come alive and reveals how their symbolism applies uniquely to my current season.

I then keep the cards laid out and visible throughout the month. Returning to them regularly helps me stay conscious of my intentions, aligned with the lunar cycle, and mindful of the themes unfolding in my life. In this way, Tarot becomes a living companion to the astrology of the moment, offering ongoing insight and gentle course correction.

Tarot as a Companion to Astrology

When you understand the zodiac signs and planetary energies in Astrology, it becomes clear why many Tarot cards are associated with specific planets or signs. Tarot brings astrological themes into the present moment, offering practical, grounded insight you can work with immediately.

Used together, Tarot and Astrology don’t replace intuition—they refine it. They invite us into a deeper relationship with ourselves, helping us navigate life with clarity, trust, and conscious intention.

Ultimately, this is the same approach I bring to my work with clients. I lead from personal experience and lived practice, honoring each individual as unique—just as every birth chart tells its own story.  Astrology remains the foundation of my work, offering structure, timing, and clarity, while Tarot and other spiritual tools add texture, reflection, and intuitive nuance. Together, they allow me to bring personalized guidance, practical wisdom, and complementary perspectives to each client session.
